‘I Survived the Nazi Invasion, 1944’ written by Lauren Tarshis is the ninth installment in her ‘I Survived’ series. With previous eight titles Tarshis in appropriate way for the target audience of younger schoolchildren using short novel format marked some important historical events such as the sinking of the Titanic, Hurricane Katrina, The Bombing of Pearl Harbor, San Francisco Earthquake or the Battle of Gettysburg.
With the last title she addressed the subject of World War II, specifically the theme of Jewish suffering by the Nazis that because of readers’ type and its length does not manage to enter into the subject’s full depth, but manages to introduce this painful topic to children in a way that will intrigue them.
The two main characters are Polish Jews Max Rosen, who is eleven and his younger sister Zena that lives in the Jewish ghetto in Esties. Their mother had died some time ago, while their father was taken by Germans and since then the children are hungry and afraid all the time.
With a combination of fate and luck the two kids will escape from the Ghetto, meet the partisans - brave people who fight Nazis, while fearing all the time for their lives, due to fierce fighting that are happening around them.
Lauren Tarshis again wrote an interesting and thrilling novel full of pace displaying minimum amount of explicit violence. Therefore this is a book that can be recommended for young readers who enjoy reading historical fiction, and are particularly interested in WW II subject.
Inside, reader will be able to find well-made World War II timeline, together with some additional resources index for those interested to learn more information about Holocaust and WW II.
