Sky Raiders: Five Kingdoms, Book 1 Description
Adventure awaits in the Five Kingdoms - come and claim it in this start to a new series from the number-one New York Times best-selling author of the Fablehaven and Beyonders series.
Cole Randolph was just trying to have a fun time with his friends on Halloween (and maybe get to know Jenna Hunt a little better). But when a spooky haunted house turns out to be a portal to something much creepier, Cole finds himself on an adventure on a whole different level.
After Cole sees his friends whisked away to some mysterious place underneath the haunted house, he dives in after them - and ends up in The Outskirts.
The Outskirts are made up of five kingdoms that lie between wakefulness and dreaming, reality and imagination, life and death. It's an in-between place. Some people are born there. Some find their way there from our world, or from other worlds.
And once you come to the Outskirts, it's very hard to leave.
With the magic of the Outskirts starting to unravel, it's up to Cole and an unusual girl named Mira to rescue his friends, set things right in the Outskirts, and hopefully find his way back home...before his existence is forgotten.

I am a huge fan of Brandon Mull’s Fablehaven series but I could not get into the Beyonders. However, I think he is a very clever writer so I gave this new book a shot and I was not at all disappointed.
The book takes place in a made up land called The Outskirts. The Outskirts is made up of 5 kingdoms and ruled by someone called the High King, or High Shaper depending on who you speak to. The beginning takes place in present day Halloween, where our hero Cole and several friends go to a haunted house that is supposed to be truly scary. Well it is because inside are people from the Outskirts kidnapping children to turn into slaves. Cole manages to escape the kidnappers’ clutches but instead of letting his friends fend for themselves he follows them into this other world to try and save them.
Cole obviously gets caught (if he was able to save everyone this would have been a short book) and gets sold into slavery to a group called the Sky Raiders. In this position, Cole risks his life to go on reconnaissance missions, scouting for dangers before the Raiders go into a sky castle and take anything worth selling. Naturally this is very dangerous and Mull’s imagination runs the gamut as he dreams up scary creatures for us to encounter with Cole during these missions. As soon as he gets to Raiders’ HQ he meets Mira, an 11-year-old girl with a big secret (naturally). Mira and Cole eventually plan to escape the Raiders as her big secret causes her to change her address at a moment’s notice. Some of the places they explore after their escape are wonderfully described and obviously scary, as Mull’s specialty seems to be taking us to made up worlds filled with horrifying things that are always out to eat you or kill you, sometimes both.
