Solefull Socks-Knitting from the Ground Up; Foreword by Cat Bordhi – February 1, 2014 Description
Review
Betty Salpekar has taken the age-old problem of worn-out sock soles and turned its practical solution into a platform for artistic expression. Her solefull sock architecture bends colorwork, traveling stitches, lace, and even plain stripes into new and fascinating forms. With copious illustrations, clear chart layout diagrams, detailed instructions, and helpful sizing tips, the knitter's only quandary is choosing which pattern to knit first. --JC Briar teacher, author of Charts Made Simple, and creator of Stitch-Maps.com
Betty has done something truly remarkable. She's taken the classic sock form and completely reimagined it. The result is socks that are beautiful, practical, and ridiculously fun to knit. --Hunter Hammersen author of The Knitter's Curiosity Cabinet series
With endless variations on an imaginative theme, these are socks, but not as we know them. Betty Salpekar has knit a a beautiful new chapter in the ongoing story of sock architecture. --Brenda Dayne host of Cast On, a podcast for knitters

SOLEFULL SOCKS is a must-have for the technical sock knitter's bookshelf. It describes a completely new architectural approach to sock knitting. Designer Betty Salpekar's imaginative sock structure makes it possible to reinforce the entire sole of a sock with carry-along yarn to solve the problem of wear (holes) on the ball of the foot or the bottom of the heel. An added bonus is the Foreword by Cat Bordhi. As Cat says, "Betty's work, which I think of as ceremonial clothing for the foot, . . . seems to be an entirely new class of footwear."
Betty's "solefull" sock begins in the middle of the sole with a provisional cast on, then proceeds outward in rounds, with the heel and toe formed by strategically-placed increases and short-row shaping. Once the sole is complete, the knitting continues upward in rounds, using decreases for shaping and a clever "zip line" that joins part of the round to form the lower portion of the sock top. From there, the sock top knitting goes on upward, using center front decreases to shape the instep. Finally, the knitting proceeds in ordinary rounds, with shaping optional, to form the ankle, leg, and cuff. To finish, the cuff is bound off with the method of your choice, and the stitches in the provisional cast on (on the sole) are grafted together.
All of this is explained with clear drawings, and with both charts and written-out instructions. Although I haven't yet tried to knit a pair of these socks, I can easily follow the concept, which is to knit a shaped cylinder to enclose the foot and leg. Although I'm usually a charts person, I think that the written-out instructions are the key to learning this new sock-knitting approach.
