Age of Ultron, one of Marvels big events this year begins with the world in utter ruins, Ultron has come back and has unleashed hell, many of earths greatest heroes are dead, those that are still alive have retreated under ground to lick their wounds and prepare to strike back. Such a great opening right? i was really excited about this event, with all the great changes (though some would argue not so great) Marvel has made in the last year since the launch of Marvel Now i really thought this event would go somewhere great.... I was wrong. Basically what brings AOU down is the lackluster/cliched poorly thought out story. People wanted an incredible story with Ultron, one of the Avengers biggest enemies, instead we got a time travel story mostly devoid of Ultron, and not a very good/original time travel story at that. That's the short review, continue reading for more in depth details.
I'm gonna give a quick run through of the main story. Warning loads of SPOILERS.
As we get into the first couple of issues we learn that Ultron is somehow attacking the world from the future using Vision as a conduit to i guess control Ultron's army's and hunt down super hero's of which he offers protection to individual's who capture and bring hero's to him. We never find out how Ultron is controlling Vision nor why Ultron would offer protection for the captors of super hero's when he's killing everybody that steps foot above ground. All this is found out thanks to Luke Cage's daring plan, having purposely knocked out She Hulk (she let him), he then takes her to Ultron's Main fortress to seemingly exchange her for protection, Ultron's forces let him in. Tell me, if you are Ultron would you let LUKE CAGE into your fortress?
This is a difficult review to write because Age of Ultron is a comic book story, marketed as one thing that turns out to be another. So while it is not bad for what it is, if you bought this hopping for an old school Avengers versus Ultron story, you may be a little disappointed. This is not an Ultron story; it is a time travel story that happens to feature Ultron as a vague threat. The story is not about defeating him, but the collateral damage that occurs in the way he is defeated. Once you realize this, the time travel story that Brian Michael Bendis crafts is quite good, well the written parts anyway.
The main factor that holds this book back is the artwork. It is not artistically bad, as much as it is uneven. The story is told in three different time periods with each period being rendered by a different artist. Unfortunately, the three styles are not compatible and are jarring when more than one appears on the same page. The best of the styles is the one that takes place in the past drawn by Carlos Pacheco. Although, I think this has more to do with the coloring by Jose Villarrubia than anything else. The worst is Bryan Hitch; his work has not been the same since he started Captain America Reborn.
The story provides an interesting look at the paradoxes found within most time travel stories, mainly what happens when you go back in time and kill a threat before it's a threat. It is action packed and moves along at a quick pace, albeit one lacking in the way of emotional character depth. One thing that I wished had been developed more is the conflict that should have occurred when one group went to the future and one went to the past. Instead, Bendis just opts to have the future group wiped out in a battle.
The story works and it's entertaining though.
