Disclaimer: I've been buying Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide almost every year for decades!!
I've used it to make up my extensive (100's of movies) list of Movies I Want to Watch/Buy, as well as to reread reviews of movies I've seen many times, and will probably watch again!
But this year's edition has fallen short!
I know, one's personal opinion is formed by one's personal tastes and predilections.
Having just now received my copy (For the 1st time, I bought the larger-size volume, as my eyesight isn't what it used to be!!), I tore open the book, seeking Maltin's opinions on my favorite movies of 2012.
So I looked for "Elena Undone", "A Perfect Ending" "The Undefeated" (the Sarah Palin career bio from 2011), and "Fast Girls", the spirited British flick about a British girl's track relay team.
NONE of my 4 current favorite movies are in this 1644 page tome!!
NONE of them!!
Neither is "Kiss Me", a Swedish film from 2012, nor "28 Hotel Rooms", or "After Fall, Winter" (the sequel to "Fall", which is ALSO not in this book!!!).
Well, I'm sure all of us can find movies we love in this book.
I know I can......1000's of them!!
But it's those great (IMHO) ones which are missing that made me cut my usual FIVE star rating down to "just" four!!

Maltin's new edition is both as thorough and maddening as all the previous editions. Alas, there are so few independent films listed - perhaps he foresaw the change in format on the Sundance Channel. Frankly, to create more room in such an all-encompassing book, he should reduce all the reviews rated BOMB to a brief, single sentence. Think of the room he could free up!
