FBP: Federal Bureau of Physics Vol. 1: The Paradigm Shift Description
Review
“If this stellar beginning is any indication of what's to follow, we're in for a delightfully unpredictable ride. Oliver and Rodriguez have something unique on their hands, and I'm looking forward to what they've got up their sleeves for the next issue.”—
IGN “
FBP sets the bar high for the rest of the year’s new releases from Vertigo.”
—A.V. Club/The Onion “A fantastic start to an exciting new series and a reminder of what a quality powerhouse Vertigo is and can be. It's also a nice reminder of why the industry needs
more books from Vertigo, not less. A higher quantity of smart, beautifully executed comics that explore the fantastical and bizarre without being about traditional superheroes is a very good thing.”—

FBP: Federal Bureau of Physics - vol. 1: The Paradigm Shift
FBP is a science fiction graphic novel set in a world where the laws of physics no longer seem to apply. There are gravity failures, wormholes, quantum tornadoes, and BubbleVerses (alternate dimensions) popping up everywhere and endangering the population. Whenever these strange anomalies occur, the FBP is called in to try and set things right.
Cicero heads a team of field agents, made up of Adam Hardy and his partner Jay, who must risk their lives to go into these anomalies and re-stabilize the area. As if that isn't dangerous enough, there is now talk about privatizing the industry they work for and all of the FBP could soon find themselves out of work.
When a BubbleVerse pops up, trapping several people inside, Adam and Jay are sent in on a rescue mission. Adam soon comes to discover, however, that his partner has an agenda of his own and he'll be lucky if he manages to escape the BubbleVerse alive.
I really enjoyed this first installment of FBP. The plot immediately grabbed my attention. The reader is thrown into this bizarre world with basically no explanation for how it became this way. I would have liked to learn what caused these various anomalies but I'll just have to wait and see if that is revealed in future installments.
I found Adam to be a likable character. He is following in the footsteps of his late father, also an FBP agent who was killed while on assignment. We learn of Adam's earlier years, and that of his father, through various flashbacks that pop up during the story. About mid-way through the story a new agent, Rosa Reyes, arrives on the team. Her background story is very intriguing and I'm anxious to find out more about her.
